"I wasn't the person I'd thought I was." That line hit me so hard... People form these biased impressions of themselves, often assuming the best. They align themselves with their principles, when it's all too easy to contradict them. Diane's problem, is that she's such an idealist, and expects everyone - including herself - to live up to an impossible standard.

Inserting a 'This is our sponsor' part in the video, and still adding 3 commercials during the video. Make a choice between 1 of the 2, but not both, that is just gready and annoying.

I feel like I would like her more if she had a better voice actress. Half the time she just sounds like a self-righteous, condescending, phoney, stoffed up 12 year old boy. I wish they would just kill her character off

You're going way too soft on Diane here. She's not the moral center of the show - she's another form of person incapable of self-actualization. Her entire deal is the quest to be seen by others as "a good person" and to believe the same about herself, even when it's clearly not true, because she sets an impossible, ridiculous goal for what a "good person" actually qualifies as. She frequently externalizes her own internal problems into external quests for some justice that will never happen, and often at the expense of other potentially more effective action. She went on a humanitarian mission to feel like she was a good person, and then, upon discovering that the person that she went to work for was really just another dude with the same foibles and shortcomings as everybody else, decided that the thing that a "good person" would do is "tell the truth" about how this other individual REALLY was. Most of what she does in this show is an effort to live up to the cartoon standards of behavior that the worst of popular liberalism on line tells you is best and she does it uncritically.

Everybody - EVERYBODY - has to deal with the problem of self-identity to some extent, and the way that Diane is doing it is better than most of the alternatives, since it at least results in her helping other people a lot of the time. It does not, however, make her happy, and that's the central problem, and why you shouldn't be holding her up as a role model. She is yet another individual trying in vain to live up to fake standards. Just like everybody else in the show, she's working her way towards health, but she's definitely not there right now, and she's not a person that you should aspire to be.

people dont understand that a character being a bad person doesnt make them a bad CHARACTER. even if u dont like diane as a person shes an amazing character. incredibly well developed and arc so far has been soooo good. the hate she gets for being a complex and interesting character really bothers me.

this also goes the other way though, with people mistaking good characters as good people. like snape in the harry potter series, his character is GREAT, but hes also facist teacher who abuses a student for years bc his mom didnt want to date him. Bad Person. Good Character. ppl need to learn how to separate them.

Brilliantly said. I'm a guy and I relate to Diane. I'm constantly rounding back on myself. Am I smart? Does my opinion hold credibility? No. I'm a moron. But I got an A! I must be a genius! But you didn't know what that thing was. You must be a moron. I like that thing! I dislike that thing! I'm so conflicted in my opinion of myself it's unreal.

i don't see myself in bojack if anything i actually hate him, i only see myself in Diane and i am very thankful that finally someone made a character like her. i love and hate her
great video again

"Truth is many-sided" now i don't know that many truths, but this one's that I'm certain with.
Tim Timuri
The reason I hate Diane is more about how she is used by the writers rather than the characters traits.
She is flawed, narcissistic, selfish, abusive and sanctimonious. All that would be fine for fiction except the writers especially in season 5 actively seem to think that she is a good person. When she's not.

Also, using her as a mouth piece to tell the audience how they should interpret the show is just terrible writing. It's NOT the writers role to tell the viewer to HOW to interpret their work.
Paul Barnes
I like Diane. I would want to date Diane (or is that just Alison Brie?). I also think that Bojack and her would work as a couple because they fundamentally love each other. Not necessarily eros, although the romantic tension is there, but philos, the love between true friends.

However, Diane isn't as moral as people want to believe. She's concerned, as the video illustrates, the myopic considerations of the "Millennial" and "SJW". She has little sense of history or repercussions because she's primarily concerned about personal authenticity and meaning. Naval-gazing, even to the point of aborting her and Mr. PB (who has his own issues) child because it would force her to look beyond herself. She's ultimately nihilistic, descending to sensuous pleasure in her Eat, Love, Pray trip to Asia while giving lip-service to fidelity in her seduction of Mr. PB. Because that's all the interior life she has developed.

People would rather relate to unhappiness (Bojack) than change for happiness (Diane) because that’s where depression likes to keep you. Unhappy. So anything challenging your unhappiness seems more like a threat & less like something helpful. Depression is familiar, change maybe not so much. Bojack is familiar, Diane maybe not so much. If you hate Diane, but like Bojack, then you’re missing the point of both characters. They go hand in hand. See what the writers of the show are trying to tell you, the viewer. Not what the characters are telling each other to each other. They aren’t speaking to you; the writers are speaking to you, through them.

absolutely love this! this video made me realize how much i truly do love diane and seeing a woman like her (and me) trying to figure it all out

Diane and Bojack are both hypocritical but the main reason Diane gets more hate is because Bojack is a narcissistic hypocrite and Diane is a self righteous hypocrite.
Insidious Vidz
Her, last name is pronounced like WIN
Alyssa Lopez
Diane is an incredibly well written & flawed character. She's contradictory and hypocritical, and she has good qualities. But that doesn't make her a likable character. While I'm sure some people dislike her because misogyny, to claim that is the main motivator for people who dislike or criticize her feels disingenuous. She's not a particularly good person; she even says so herself that there is no deep down, only what you do.

Tbh my favorite character is Princess Caroline or Todd.
