The Crusades had decreasing success as they continued. Eleanor of Aquitaine joined the second Crusade as well as the German king, Friedrich Barbarossa. The Turkish leader, Saladin defeated the Crusaders in the holy land. Richard Lionheart is killed on Crusade and is succeeded by his brother John who is forced to yield some of his power by signing the Magna Carta.
