The Solar, Lunar and Jewish Calendar Saving Faith - 2 months ago   05:16

The solar and lunar calendars each have their strengths. This segment from Dr. David Neiman's series, "Cradles of Civilization" discusses the method of reconciliation between these two systems and the adjustments made to the lunar system in the Jewish calendar.

Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity.

Dr. Neiman was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America's leading Catholic Universities. He served as Professor in the Department of Theology for a quarter of a century. While there he was also invited to teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After retiring from Boston College, Dr.Neiman moved to Los Angeles, where he taught at Loyola Marymount University, St. John' s Seminary in Camarillo and the University of Judaism in Bel Air.

The leap years in the 19 year cycle (the machzor ha'katan) are the 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, 19 years and NOT the 16th year, as you said.
I have two nitpicky points. He said EXACT coincidence every 19 years. Firstly, Coincidence implies almost randomly but this being regular it's not an actual coincidence. Secondly, I just double-checked and it's remarkably close but not exact. I was born in 18 March 1992 which corresponds to 13 Adár II but 13 Adár II 19 years later actually corresponds to 19 March 2011, not 18. Both were just nitpicks that somebody probably pointed out already but I was to lazy to check

I also have a question. According to Wikipedia the 13 month years have two Adárs and Adár I being the actual extra and all holidays and celebrations in Adár are held on Adár II. As I mentioned I was born on 13 Adár II so during the regular 12 month years I'd celebrate on 13 Adár. But what if I had a friend that had been born on 13 Adár I? Would we have seperate birthdays in the 13 month years but celebrate together in the 12 month years or is it solved some other way?

Great video by the way and even though I am not Jewish I kind of think the Hebrew calendar is better than the Gregorian one.

The Saturn cycle is 29.5 years. Fun clock work. Sarurn is Father time, his (electric) cycle is longest to the naked eye.
What does he mean "we ADDED a 7 day week which is invariable"? Did they add a week sometime?

Why does he call the pagan Roman calendar? a Christian calendar? He must be a Jesuit.

Jews stole their calendar from the Babylonians.
The earth is flat and the sun and moon move around a flat motionless plane. The moon gives off her own light and the shadow on the moon is not a reflection of the sunlight.

This hurts the brain but basically it means using the modern calender to determine the Sabbath is wrong? You basically need to use the sun and the moon for a correct keeping of the Sabbath. So basically every faith is wrong? Gosh I wish I was smarter. Thank you for the video. You should have more likes because this is rather important.
