Ruptly is live from Hong Kong on Wednesday, June 12, as protesters call for another demonstration against a controversial extradition bill set to be discussed on the same day by the city’s Legislative Council.
The anti-establishment Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and student associations have reportedly urged members to join the strike and reprise the protests that drew hundreds of thousands on Sunday, June 9.
Hong Kong companies said they would suspend work or even allow flexible office hours to accommodate workers planning to demonstrate near the city’s Legislative Council. The government said it opposed the student strike.
In February, the Hong Kong government proposed amending the law so that the city can accept extradition requests from countries where there is no prior agreement.
