Lilia Tarawa was brought up in the Gloriavale Christian Community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, where she was constantly surrounded by everyone she loved. But over time, she began to see the dark side of her community, and ultimately realised that she had to get out. In this raw and emotional talk, Lilia shares the reality of life in a cult, and her heart-wrenching journey to break free.

Lilia Tarawa is a New Zealand writer, speaker, holistic health consultant and business coach. She is a member of the Māori Ngāi Tahu tribe. Lilia was born into New Zealand's infamous religious cult, Gloriavale, and fled with her eleven family members at eighteen years of age. Her extraordinary life experience compelled her to pursue a career promoting human rights, welfare and empowerment. We have many cults in this world. Feminism is another cult with rules and regulations as well. Our Creator looks down on us and sighs, if only they will listen and follow ME, they would have avoided all this! People of like mind will find each other. Leadership is important and so are followers. True leaders and followers understand that they both follow the Creator of the heavens and Earth. That's the difference between a cult and members of a productive and supportive community. Wearing red lipstick and watching rated R movies are not true signs of liberation and leaving a cult. I too have left religions and I continue to heal. What I don't want to now is deny the fact that there is a True and Righteous Creator whose original plan mankind has defiled and made less desirable by abominable CULTS!

Well, what a resemblance to how I was raised in the USSR, a closed Communist community spending over Europe and Asia, no one was allowed to leave as well.
