China's top economic planner on Tuesday expressed confidence in meeting the 6.5 percent annual growth target set in the government work report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang on Monday, as domestic consumption is expected to become a larger force driving economic development. He Lifeng, Director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), made the remarks during a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

Rumours of a sharp Chinese economic slowdown appear to be have been greatly exaggerated. Despite high debt levels, pollution and a leader who wants to cool growth down, China's GDP accelerated for the first time in seven years in 2017. Its fourth quarter GDP reading also beat estimates. Analysts say the world's second biggest economy is adapting well to measures aimed at tackling deep structural problems.
